Special Inspections

faulkner edc’s Special Inspections and Testing offerings include inspections of concrete, steel, welding, bolting, masonry, post tensioning, soils, spray fireproofing, eifs, wood, and still more building materials. To date our leadership has managed as the special inspector of record or principal in charge some of the largest and most complex projects in the state of NC including the UNC Cancer Center, Greensquare Complex in Raleigh, NCCU Science Building, UNCW Cultural Arts Center, and UNC Imaging Research Building to name a few. Further, we have been instrumental in the development of best practices for delivering special inspections services having served locally in the development of jurisdictional guidelines and nationally as a member of the governing body responsible for codifying these requirements. As a result we are poised to deliver a testing and inspection program that both meets the requirements of local codes and also serves the building owner in producing a higher quality of construction resulting in fewer maintenance issues and lower energy costs.

faulkner edc’s leadership has the experience of successfully delivering many past projects to a variety of clients. One such project example is the UNC Chapel Hill Imaging Research Building in which Mr. Faulkner served as Principal in Charge of the SI and CMT program. The project included monitoring of blasting of rock and inspections of a deep foundation system. The structural system was primarily concrete which Mr. Faulkner’s staff inspected continuously during installation. The project had many complications not the least of which were very sensitive and medically important experiments being run by researchers on three sides of the building we were serving during construction. In response Mr. Faulkner’s staff set up seismographs is strategic locations and monitor vibration throughout the early construction phases and recommended changes to means and methods to protect these experiments.

I have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Faulkner over the past several years on a variety of projects at UNC Chapel Hill. He has provided his leadership to no less than a dozen projects on the campus in the last five years including notable projects such as the Cancer Hospital, Genetic Medicine Building, Global Education Building and many more. He has successfully managed the Special Inspections and Testing program on these projects as either special inspector of record or principal in charge…Tommy’s knowledge of building codes, guidelines and requirements leave no question unanswered. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Faulkner for Design or Quality Assurance Services to your project.
